High Functioning Women Are Often The Most Burnt Out
The women who cope the best are often the ones struggling the most.
Because competence hides exhaustion.
You are organised.
Capable.
Reliable.
You still get things done.
So nobody notices the cost.
High functioning women are often praised for over functioning.
For pushing through.
For staying productive.
For carrying pressure well.
But being able to tolerate stress does not mean stress is not affecting you.
It usually means you have become disconnected from the signals.
Many women ignore:
• hunger
• fatigue
• emotional overwhelm
• recovery needs
• nervous system exhaustion
Because functioning became identity.
Rest feels uncomfortable.
Slowing down feels unsafe.
Needing support feels weak.
So they keep going.
This is where chronic stress quietly reshapes physiology.
Elevated cortisol affects:
• sleep quality
• appetite regulation
• cycle health
• thyroid function
• inflammation
• body composition
The body adapts to chronic pressure by becoming protective.
And eventually symptoms appear.
Not because the body failed.
Because it has been compensating for too long.
Productivity addiction is one of the most socially rewarded forms of dysregulation.
Women who are constantly achieving are rarely told to slow down.
They are admired.
But the nervous system does not care whether stress is socially rewarded.
Pressure is still pressure.
Emotional suppression also carries physical consequences.
Women who intellectualise emotion, override discomfort and continue performing through distress often experience symptoms through the body instead.
Digestive issues.
Fatigue.
Hormonal disruption.
Sleep disturbance.
The body communicates what the mind avoids.
Successful women often ignore burnout longer because capability delays consequences.
You can survive in stress for years before the body forces a pause.
But survival is not health.
At some point, coping stops being resilience.
And becomes self abandonment.
The nervous system was never designed to remain in constant output.
Recovery is not a luxury.
It is biological maintenance.
