The Ozempic Era: You're Not Addicted to Food- You're Addicted to Control

If you’ve been scrolling social media recently, you’ve probably noticed the buzz around Ozempic and similar medications. Stories of rapid weight loss, extreme restriction, and “hacking” your appetite dominate the conversation. But beneath the headlines, there’s an important truth: this isn’t just about food. It’s about control.

Many women come to me saying they feel addicted to certain foods, struggling with cravings, guilt, or bingeing. But often, what’s really at play isn’t food addiction — it’s a need to control outcomes, body shape, or self-worth.

Control Masquerading as Appetite

Food becomes a way to manage emotions, feel productive, or assert self-discipline. When we rely on external tools like medication to suppress appetite, we can inadvertently reinforce the belief that our bodies are untrustworthy and that control is the only path to feeling “safe” or worthy.

This mindset isn’t new. It’s often shaped by early experiences — messages about what it means to be “good,” fear of failure, or the idea that your value is tied to appearance or performance.

Why Restriction Fails in the Long-Term

Suppressing hunger or strictly restricting calories might give short-term results, but it rarely addresses the underlying patterns. Eventually, emotions, stress, or life events bring cravings back. The more we try to control, the louder our body’s signals become.

True change comes from rebuilding trust in your body, recognising true hunger, and learning to respond to it without shame or guilt.

Shifting the Focus from Control to Alignment

Instead of fighting your body, start supporting it:

  • Intuitive Eating Practices to reconnect with hunger and fullness cues.

  • Mindset Work to explore what control around food really represents.

  • Balanced Nutrition to provide adequate fuel for energy, hormones, and recovery.

  • Movement You Enjoy that strengthens and energises rather than punishes.

  • Emotional Regulation Tools to process feelings without turning to restriction or over-eating.

The goal is not perfection. It’s learning that your body, cravings, and appetite are signals, not obstacles.
