You've Been Lied To About Eating Less
For decades, women have been sold the same message.
If you want to lose weight, eat less.
If that does not work, eat even less.
And if you're still not seeing results, you probably are not trying hard enough.
It is one of the most damaging pieces of advice in women's health.
Not because energy balance does not matter.
It does.
But because reducing the conversation to "just eat less" ignores physiology, hormones and everything we now understand about the female body.
Many women are not struggling because they are eating too much.
They are struggling because they have spent years eating too little.
Too little protein.
Too little carbohydrate.
Too little energy.
Too little recovery.
And then wondering why their body no longer responds.
The body is remarkably intelligent.
It does not simply count calories.
It responds to the environment you repeatedly create.
If energy intake remains chronically low while stress and physical output remain high, your body adapts.
It has to.
Metabolism becomes more efficient.
Recovery slows.
Hunger hormones change.
Thyroid function adapts.
Reproductive hormones become less of a priority.
Not because your body is broken.
Because it is trying to keep you alive.
This is called low energy availability.
It occurs when there is not enough energy left to support normal physiological function once exercise and daily life have been accounted for.
The consequences can include:
• increased fatigue
• reduced recovery
• menstrual irregularities
• lower thyroid activity
• impaired muscle growth
• increased food preoccupation
• reduced performance
Many women are living here without realising it.
The irony is that eating less often makes food occupy more of your mind.
You think about it constantly.
You crave it.
You negotiate with yourself.
You promise you'll be "good" tomorrow.
The problem is not your willpower.
It is your biology.
A brain that perceives scarcity becomes increasingly focused on obtaining food.
That is survival.
Not failure.
Then there is muscle.
Muscle is metabolically active tissue.
It improves insulin sensitivity.
Supports healthy ageing.
Protects bone density.
Increases strength.
Helps regulate blood sugar.
Yet muscle cannot be built from restriction alone.
It requires fuel.
Protein.
Recovery.
Progressive overload.
You cannot ask your body to build while simultaneously convincing it resources are scarce.
This becomes even more important as women move through their thirties and into perimenopause.
Hormonal changes naturally make preserving muscle more difficult.
Recovery changes.
Oestrogen declines.
Insulin sensitivity can reduce.
Continuing to eat less while expecting better body composition becomes increasingly ineffective.
What worked at twenty five often stops working at forty.
Not because your metabolism is broken.
Because your physiology has changed.
Some women respond by cutting calories again.
More cardio.
More fasting.
More restriction.
But all they do is deepen the deficit.
The body simply becomes better at surviving.
Not thriving.
This is why I rarely ask the first question most women expect.
I do not ask,
"What should we take away?"
I ask,
"What is missing?"
Enough protein.
Enough carbohydrates to support training.
Enough recovery.
Enough sleep.
Enough strength training.
Enough consistency.
The healthiest, strongest women I know are rarely the ones eating the least.
They are the women fuelling their physiology.
They understand that nourishment is not the opposite of discipline.
It is the foundation of it.
The goal is not to eat as little as possible.
The goal is to create a body that feels safe enough to adapt.
A body that trusts it will be fed.
Recovered.
Supported.
Only then does it have the resources to build muscle, regulate hormones and improve body composition.
The hard truth is this.
You have probably spent years trying to become smaller.
When what your body has been asking for all along is enough.
Enough fuel.
Enough recovery.
Enough respect.
Because the solution was never simply eating less.
It was learning how to support your body well enough that it no longer needed to protect itself.
